چکیده

Fitch’s paradox shows, from fairly innocent-looking assumptions, that if there are any unknown truths, then there are unknowable truths. This is generally thought to deliver a blow to antirealist positions that imply that all truths are knowable. The present paper argues that a probabilistic version of antirealism escapes Fitch’s result while still offering all that antirealists should care for. 1. Antirealism and Fitch’s Paradox. Define antirealism as the thesis that truth is epistemically constrained. While this can be cashed out in various ways, it is commonly taken to imply at least that all truths are knowable, that is,

An axiomatic version of Fitch's paradox

A variation of Fitch's Paradox is given, where no special rules of inference are assumed, only axioms. These axioms follow from the familiar assumptions which involve rules of inference. We show (by constructing a model) that by allowing that possibly the knower doesn't know his own soundness (while still requiring he be sound), Fitch's Paradox is avoided. Provided one is willing to admit that ...

Quantum Bayesianism: A Study

The Bayesian approach to quantummechanics of Caves, Fuchs and Schack is presented. Its conjunction of realism about physics along with antirealism about much of the structure of quantum theory is elaborated; and the position defended from common objections: that it is solipsist; that it is too instrumentalist; that it cannot deal with Wigner’s friend scenarios. Three more substantive problems a...

Does Stanford’s induction apply to engineering sciences?

Recent works in scientific realism by Stanford (2006) and Chakravartty (2008) have generated interests in the research of a more selective and sophisticated scientific realism. Such debates advance the philosophical development of scientific realism, and arguably shape scientific realism toward a more refined description. Among many scientific theories discussed by Stanford (2006) and Chakravar...
